Honorable Mention
The Infidel
Lauriette (Laurie Byro)

Wind picked up, my cheeks ruddy
with wine. Sand blew dunes into swirls,
the inside of a nautilus shell.

I wanted to travel, to hurry, a storm
followed sending scorpions
skittering for cover.

Women—I had my fill. The last
bound my hands with scarves
we danced around. Fire flicked
up our thighs, me too stupid from stars
and wine to realize the cost.
I lost a bag of coin for a kiss, my skin
throbbed from rabid lips.

After I worked loose my hands, released
my fingers, I vowed—I’d sleep safe and alone.
A storm sought her revenge, sent
her pleasure loose. A caftan, beige
and voluptuous—I rode in whirling silks.
Sand whipped my back.

Peace.
The Sea. Periwinkle and cornflower.
A glittering maid. I reached my sanctuary,
saved myself in ocean eyes.

I stripped down, dove into her bosom. Jumped
into her rescuing embrace.

Alas. Another maid.
Similar, yet different. I wondered at her tail.
Light reflected off incandescent scales,
flirted with moonlight.

She made me thirst for the sting of the desert.
She made me believe
in God.
